Karim Abu Salem is an aerospace engineer and researcher at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Politecnico di Torino. His main scientific interests cover the aircraft design area, focusing on innovative aircraft architectures and propulsion systems. He earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2021, with a research related to the multidisciplinary design of the box-wing aircraft configuration. Prior to his PhD, he completed his Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Pisa in 2016. His current research involves aerospace vehicle design and performance analysis, development of multidisciplinary design and optimization tools, studies on non-conventional lifting architectures, analysis of novel propulsion systems for transport aircraft (e.g. electric, hybrid-electric, hydrogen), and flight simulation.
